Dear Christopher,

[marginalia: “…. +Ramsey letter”]

Thank you for your letter of February 10th. The only way I know of answering your question, which I have discussed with Bishop Howe who is with me in Rome, has been to suggest to the Bishop that he makes known to His Holiness, at the occasion of his audience, the possibility of these letters being published, so that some indication of His Holiness’ wishes, as far as the issue concerns him, may be obtained. The Bishop’s audience is to-morrow, in private, at 11 a.m.

With regard to the letter of the Pope to the Archbishop dated November 25, 1975, my opinion is that this letter would be best disclosed in the context of the General Synod of the Church of England, as it is a reply to a question addressed through the Archbishop from that body.

I am,

Yours sincerely,

Harry Reynolds Smythe
