Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton (1774-1821) is the first declared U.S. native-born saint. Born in New York City of an Episcopalian family, later mother of five children, then widowed, she became a Catholic in 1805 and founded the Sisters of Charity of Saint Joseph at Emmitsburg, Maryland.
