A critical theological review of the English translation of Fr. Manfred Hauke’s major treatise, Women in the Priesthood? A Systematic Analysis in Light of the Order of Creation and Redemption (Ignatius Press, 1988). Hauke, a conservative German theologian and dogmatician, argued against the ordination of women by invoking the “order of creation,” gender symbolism, and natural law. Soskice’s piece challenged Hauke’s arguments. Soskice argued that Hauke’s use of specific psychological, cultural, and Jungian archetype theories to defend an all-male priesthood was a “Trojan Horse.” She contended that bringing these non-scriptural, speculative gender theories into Catholic theology compromised orthodox sacramental theology rather than protecting it.
