The date of this paper is unclear. The protocol number indicates 1988, but the paper is mentioned in correspondence in spring 1999 as commissioned for the fall 1999 plenary meeting of ARCIC-II. Tillard’s paper makes frequent reference to Salvation and the Church (ARCIC-II 64), published in 1986, but not to any later ARCIC materials. So, it is likely that the paper was written in 1988 but not submitted at that time. The corresponding Anglican paper was written by Rowan Williams in 1999.
