Communiqué

The Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) met from 26 August to 2 September at the Queen of Apostles Renewal Centre, Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Bishop Frank Griswold, the Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church (USA), joined the Commission as the Anglican Co-chairman.

Since its previous plenary meeting in 1998 ARCIC has published the Agreed Statement concluded at that meeting. This Statement, The Gift of Authority, carried forward the ARCIC’s work on authority, published in The Final Report. It has been published both in the official English version, and also made available in French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. The texts were also available on the Vatican’s and Anglican Communion’s websites (http://www.vatican.va, http://www.anglicancommunion.org). During its meeting the Commission reviewed some of the preliminary reactions to The Gift of Authority.

As background material for an international meeting of Anglican and Catholic bishops which is to take place at Mississauga in May 2000, ARCIC worked to produce a document which will highlight key elements from its past work. Reviewing remaining questions to be considered from ARCIC’s mandate, the Commission also engaged in some preliminary discussion of the ecumenical problems surrounding the Virgin Mary.

During its plenary meeting ARCIC was honoured to be invited to a dinner by Cardinal Ambrozic, the Archbishop of Toronto and Bishop Bedford-Jones, Suffragan Bishop of Toronto.

It was also grateful for the presence of the Revd Dr Michael Kinnamon as Faith and Order Observer from the World Council of Churches.

The Commission’s next plenary meeting will be in Paris, France beginning on 26 August 2000.
