Rev. Fr. Albino F. Barrera, O.P. (b. January 3, 1956) is a Filipino-American Dominican priest and scholar whose work bridges economics, moral theology, and Catholic social thought. Born in Manila, he completed an engineering degree at De La Salle University before earning a Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 1988 and a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (S.T.L.) from the Pontifical Faculty of the Immaculate Conception, Washington, D.C., in 1994. Ordained in 1993, he is currently Professor of Economics and Theology at Providence College, Rhode Island.
Fr. Barrera’s research focuses on economic ethics, globalization, and the Church’s role in economic justice. His notable publications include Market Complicity and Christian Ethics (2011), Globalization and Economic Ethics (2007), and Biblical Economic Ethics (2013). In September 2021, Pope Francis appointed him as a member of the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences, recognizing his contributions to theology and social economics.
He also serves on the Anglican–Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC), starting in 2018. A member of the St. Joseph Province (New York) of the Order of Preachers, he continues to integrate rigorous scholarship with a commitment to justice and moral agency in economic life.
