Godfried Maria Jules Danneels (4 June 1933–14 March 2019) was a Belgian cardinal. He studied Catholic theology at Leuven and later in Rome at the Gregorian. He received his doctorate in 1961. Ordained priest in 1957 for the diocese of Bruges in Flanders, he was appointed professor of liturgy and spirituality at the Bruges episcopal seminary in 1959. He was appointed bishop of Antwerp in 1977 and then archbishop of Mechelen-Brussels in 1979. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 1983. He retired in 2010.
