1944-48, Classics at Christi College, Oxford; 1961-63, Theology at the Gregorian University, Rome. He taught at Heythrop College in the University of London. He is known for his substantial contributions to scholarship in biblical, Syriac, and theological studies. He has been a member of the Jesuit Order since 1949 and is noted for his dedication to Jewish-Christian relationships as well as inter-Christian dialogue. He was a friend of J.R.R. Tolkein and assisted in proofreading the manuscripts of The Lord of the Rings.
