Born Giovanni Battista Montini in Concesio, Brescia, 26 September 1897; ordained Priest, 1920; Attaché, Apostolic Nunciature in Warsaw, 1923; called to service of Secretariat of State, Vatican City, October 1924; Professor of History of Pontifical Diplomacy, 1931-1937; Substitute of the Secretariat of State, 1937; appointed Pro-Secretary of State by Pope Pius XII, 1952; Archbishop of Milan, 1954-1963; Cardinal, 1958; elected Pope, 21 June 1963; solemn Coronation 30 June 1963; died Vatican City 6 August 1978.
