FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LIBERTY, MO — Anglican and Roman Catholic Bishops joined together for three days of prayer at Immacolata Retreat House (here) May 25-27.

The retreat was under the cosponsorship of the Committee for Ecumenism of the Episcopal Church and the Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs.

Dr. Massey Shepherd of the Theological Union, Berkeley, California, and Father Herbert Ryan, S.J., of Woodstock College, New York, were the two retreat masters.

Earlier this month, the Joint Commission on Anglican-Roman Catholic Relations (ARC) — an official theological study group which has held discussions for the past five years — released a statement declaring it saw no theological reason why the two churches could not eventually achieve “full communion and organic union.”

The statement, which represented only the views of the ARC group, also recommended practical forms of cooperation between Anglicans and Roman Catholics, including joint meetings of bishops, joint clergy conferences and joint social action. At the time of the ARC statement was released — at a New York news conference May 4 — it was also announced that the Anglican-Catholic bishops’ retreat just completed here would take place.

The following Anglican and Catholic bishops attended the retreat:
